With
the rise of the popularity of American country music, an original subgenre
developed in Ireland called country and Irish; it was formed by combining the
American country music with the Irish influences, incorporating the Irish folk
music. This often resulted in the traditional Irish songs being sung in a
country music pattern, it is especially famous in the local Midlands and North-West
of the country. This also remains famous among Irish settlers in Great Britain.
Big Tom and the Mainliners were the first major candidates in this genre,
having crossed over the showband period of the 1960s. Other major musicians
were Philomena Begley and Margo; the latter even being bestowed the unofficial
title of Queen of county and Irish. The most successful artist in the genre now
is Daniel O’Donnell, who has gathered success in the Australia, United States
and United Kingdom.
