Caste-based
traditional poems (kavi) derived as
communal chant shared within individual groups as that engaged in their daily
work. Presently, they continue a well-known type of cultural expression. Kavi is also song that follows the
annual rituals. These olden rites are uncommonly performed in current Sri
Lanka, but the well-preserved songs are still done by the traditional artists.

Another
folk Sri Lankan traditional pattern is known as virindu. This involves the improvised poem sung to the beaten
melody of a rabana. Folk song competitions were held within two virindu singers that will compete
through impulsive verse.
The
art, dances and music of Sri Lanka were originated from ritualistic responses
to natural occurrence. Sri Lanka’s earliest traditional music was later
affected by the influx of Buddhist customs. These chants were done by ordinary
people and not merely recited by the priestly castes.
