The samphor is a small barrel drum
that comes from Cambodia. The instrument has two heads and is played with the
use of both hands. The player of this musical instrument leads the pinpeat as
the setter of the tempo and beat. The samphor is similar to the ‘taphon’ that
is found in Thailand.

The samphor is produced by echoing
out a single block of wood into a shape. Both ends of the instrument are
covered with the skin of animals such as calf and tightened by strips of
rattan. One head of the drum is bigger than the other to permit varying tones.
The player tunes each head by applying a circle of paste produced of ashes and
rice. The drummer uses four different strokes which an open and closed stroke
goes for each end. And all the four
sounds possess a Cambodian name.
o The
Open stroke, small head (ting)
o The
Closed stroke, small head (tip)
o The
Open stroke, large head (theung)
The Closed stroke, large head (tup)
