Afonso Henrique da Costa Guimarães known with the name Alphonsus de
Guimaraens was born on the 24th July 1870 in the city of Ouro Preto;
he died on the 15th July 1921. He was a Brazilian poet.

Alphonsus de Guimaraens’s poems are mystical and have more to do with
catholism. The sonnets he wrote show a classical structure and all of them are
religious. His poems became meaningful to every member of the society as they
aim at finding out the meaning of death, the meaning opf impossible love, the
meaning of solitude and his inadequacy about the world.
Alphonsus de Guimaraens’s works made him one of the main symbolist
writers in the country.
Biography
Alphonsus de Guimaraens was born in the city of Ouro Preto in the state of
Minas Gerais. He was the son of the Portuguese trader
Albino da Costa Guimarães and Francisca de Paula Guimarães Alvim. He enrolled
in engineering course in the year 1887 in his city.
He moved to the city
of Sao Paulo when he was sick in the year 1891 to study Law in the University
Largo do Francisco and it was there that he worked with the local newspapers of
the city like Correio Paulistano,
Diário Mercantil, O Estado de S. Paulo and A Gazeta, Comércio de São Paulo.
Three year later he
moved back to Ouro Preto, finishing his study of law in the year 1894. In the
year 1895, he met and became friend with a poet of the country called João da
Cruz e Sousa. Alphonsus de Guimaraens
got married to Zenaide de Oliveira in the year 1897.
In the year 1902, he
published his work called Kiriale under the penname of Alphonsus de Guimaraens and that created many
chances in the world of literature and gave him popularity.
After he had refused a good position in the newspaper of the country
called A Gazeta, Alphonsus de Guimaraens as selected to direct the political newspaper of
the country known as Conceição do Serro and it was there
that he worked with his brother Archangelus de Guimaraens, Cruz e Souza and
José Severino de Resende.
Alphonsus de Guimaraens lived the last years of his life with the wife ,
whom he had the total of 14 children with.
He died on the 15th July 1921 in Mariana.
