The drones of the musical instrument
are made up of two pieces of wood that telescope into one another to tune the
musical instrument. The drones of the instrument have single reeds. The chanter
of the musical instrument is equipped with a double reed of plastic or reed.
The cornemuse du centre is a
chromatic musical instrument, on the most modern versions of the musical
instrument; al semitones of the scale can be performed. The musical instrument
is commonly not tuned to an equal temperament, to permit in harmony with the
drones of the instrument. Also, because of the presence of the drones on the
instrument which cannot be tuned to another pitch, only a subset of the keys
that technically would be feasible are often performed, i.e. the drone of the
instrument is either the tonic of the key or the dominant of the key. Used
embellishments do not function, also not all if the music is transposed to
another key. As most semitones can be perform, music in various modes of a key
can be and are traditionally performed, which may not be possible on a strict
diatonic musical instrument.
The fingering of the chanter is often
semi-closed for high pitched musical instrument, meaning that the fingers of
the lower hand are always placed on their holes when removing the fingers of
the upper hand. Chanters that are about 20 inches or higher are commonly
performed with open fingering.
