In Perigord, there is a pipe that is
locally known as a chabrette that shares many features with the chabrette
limousine, but also many differences that distinguish it from limousine.
The cabrette auvergnate gradually
substituted the native version of the musical instrument in Limousine and other
areas of the Massif Central. The musette berrichonne was played in the
northeast of Limousine in Creuse. Other versions of bagpipes that are locally
made or imported are performed throughout the region.
Primary field researchers have been
conducted from the year 1975 to the present days by the ethnomusicologist and
player of the musical Eric Montbel, and by makers Claude Girard and Thierry
Boisvert. An important step for the contemporary survival of the musical
instrument took place in the 1987, when the department of traditional music of
the regional conservatory of Limoges undertook to endorse the teaching of the
musical instrument repertory, and in the year 2003 formed the musical group
known as ‘Couleur Chabrette’.
