The conocchie is a percussion musical instrument that is used in the folk music of much of southern Italy. The musical instrument is technically a rattle and was traditionally carved from a shepherd’s staff of a distaff that was used in the craft of spinning. The staff has compartment that is permanently attached on the top containing seed rattles. The musical instrument had ritual compatibility significance. In the modern days, such musical instrument comes in several shapes, all variations of the wooden staff and may be very decoratively carved. The musical instrument has been used normally through history.
