The pilai is a kind of Finnish bagpipe that is described as primitive and as being analogous to the Russian volynka. A 1796 text describes the musical instrument as the last of the Russian wind musical instrument, but noted that the instrument belong to the Finns. The same text describes the instrument as being produced with a mouth piece, two pipes and an undressed skin of a goat.
