Ribas was born in Luanda; he is the son of ArnaldoGoncalvesRibas, a Portuguese and Maria de Conceicao Bento Faria, and Angolan. His first publications were two novelsNuvensquepassam (Clouds that pass) in 1927 and Resgate de umafalta (Rescue of a lack) in 1929.

In his 20s, Oscar Bento Ribas suffered from gradual loss of sight, not minding that he kept on with his research works and writing. In the year 1950, he published Flores e espinhos (Flowers and Thorns) and Uanga (Magic) and in the year 1952 Ecos da minha terra (Echoes of my land).
