The clave rhythmic style is used as a tool for temporal organization in Afro-Cuban music like rumba, conga de comparsas, son, mambo (music), salsa, latin jazz, songo and timba. The five stroke clave pattern represents the functional core of many Afro-Cuban songs. Just as a keystone hold an arch in place, the clave style holds the song together in Afro-Cuban music. The clave style came in the sub-Saharan Africa music traditions, where it serves essentially the same function as it does in Cuban. The pattern is also originated in the African diaspora music of Haitian vodou drumming and Afro-Brazilian music, the clave pattern is used in the North American popular music as a song motif or ostinato or simply a form of rhythmic decoration.
