The kannel is an Estonian plucked
zither. The musical instrument is one of the family of Baltic psalteries that
includes the Finnish kantele, the Russian gusli, the Latvian kokle and the
Likthuanian kankles. The musical instrument has a variety of traditional
tunings. In the Estonian nation, studying the musical instrument has made
revival after some years of it being discarded. The musical instrument became
rare in the early part of the 20th century, but surviving in some
parts of the Estonian provinces, until cultural movements that went under the
Soviets encouraged the development and performing of larger chromatic version
of the kannel. Meanwhile, influence from the neighboring traditional Finnish
kantele performers supported the performing of the traditional smaller version
of the kannel.

The musical instrument serves as a
national symbol of the Estonian nation; the publication of Jakob Hurt 1875-1876
of Estonian folksong was named Vana kannel. The musical instrument was
legendarily performed by the Estonian god of song known as Vanemuine.
