The English bagpipes are bagpipes
that are played in England. Of these bagpipes, the only continuous tradition is
that of the Northumbrian small pipes that are used in the northeastern region
of the Northumberland.

Although the musical instruments had
been used formerly in some other parts of the country dating back to the Middle
Age at least, all of them died out except the Northumbrian small pipes. Their
reconstruction is a contested problem, as many different types of extinct
bagpipes have been claimed and reconstructed based upon iconography or textual
clues from the historical sources in the country, but in all cases no
undisputed physical examples are found.
Bagpipe musical instruments are
mentioned in the English literature as early as The Canterbury Tales written by
Geoffrey Chaucer between 1380s and 1390s. Stone carvings and wood carvings of
the musical instrument of many varieties began to show up in English cathedral
and churches starting in the 14th century.
