The orutu is a one-stringed fiddle that can be
found in the western Kenya, especially among the Luo community in the country.
The
name of the musical instrument is also used to refer to a genre of music in
Kenya that involves the use of this musical instrument. The musical instrument
is also a major part of the benga musical genre, and the band; Kenge Kenge Orutu System is the most productive users of
orutu.
The musical instrument is performed a
bit like the violin, though it has a distinctive and more African sound to it.
The musical instrument is accompanied by the drums and singings, but these
musical instrument are not very prominent as most people in the country are
very poor and mot many of them have the money to go for the lessons of music of
even to buy the musical instrument. Few teachers are seen teaching the musical
instrument.
