JING: Korean musical instrument

The jing is a large gong that is used in traditional music of Korea, especially in samul nori, pungmul, and daechwita. The musical instrument is often manufactured from brass. The instrument is struck by a hammer that is covered with the use of a soft cloth to smoothen the quality of the sound that is manufactured from the musical instrument.
The jing is characteristically performed at the onset of ceremonials and special circumstances. The musical instrument is struck with the use of a large, insulated stick and drops in pitch to some extent when struck inflexibly. Its name of the musical instrument was originally pronounced as jeong.
