AJAENG: Korean musical instrument

The ajaeng is a string musical instrument from Korea. The musical instrument is a wide zither that has strings carved of twisted silk. The musical instrument is played by means of slim stick manufactured of forsythia wood that is scrapped against the strings of the musical instrument in a manner of a bow. The unique version of the musical instrument that is used in the court music, has 7 strings, while the version of the musical instrument that is used for sanjo and sinawi has 8 strings, some versions of the musical instrument have about 9 strings.
The musical instrument is commonly played while seated on the floor. The musical instrument has a deep tone that is analogous to that of a cello, but more rapsy. Some modern day players of the musical instrument prefer to use a real horse hair bow instead of a stick, believing that the sound will be smoother. The musical instrument is formally used in court, aristocratic music and folk music and also in the modern classical music and film scores. The musical instrument is derived from the Chinese yazheng.
