Biography
Abdelli was born in
Metch Behali, a hamlet in the Great Kabylie in the country, Algeria, at the
time of the Algerian War of Independence. His family was displaced with the use
of bomb on their village, Kennour, which is a part of Tizi Ouzou Province by
the French Airforce. After the war, his family went on to settle at coastal
town of Dellys. As a kid, he constructed his first guitar with the use of an
empty oil can and a plan of wood and the fish line. After he had learned to
play the guitar, he was introduced to the mandolin by the Chaabi master, Chaïd
Moh-Esguir.
Abdelli played his
first music in Dellys, Kabylie at the time of the Algerian Independence
festival. He won many competitions in the country for the amateur musicians of
the country. He brought out his first album in the year 1984, but the album met
little success. Aftern two years, he dropped another album that sold 12,000
copies, though never got payment from the record of the record company. Abdelli
manufactured some other albums in the country, though he moved to Belgium in
the year 1984. It was in Belgium that he met with a Producer called Thierry van
Roy, who was so fascinated with the music of Abdelli, he spent 2 years to
explore the roots of the Berbers’ musical culture at the University of Algiers.

of Abdelli are called New Moon and Among Brothers. He has been a part of many
major festivals in europe with the WOMAD as well as the 0110 concert in Ghent.
He has also travelled to England, USA and Canada to play music.
