an Arbereshe politician and a poet of the 19th century. He is seen
as one of the early writers of the Albanian National Awakening.

Life
Dara was born on the 8th January, 1826 in Palazzo Adriano,
which is a town that is in Sicily, in the southern part of Italy. His family
was among the first families to leave the country, Albania to Italy after the
death of Skanderbeg. Gebriele Dara the Elder, his grandfathetr was among the
first people to collect the Arbëreshë folklore, while his
father Andrea Dara printed a dictionary of folkloric terms.
At a tender age, he became conversant with Latin language and the ancient
Greek. It was in Palermo that he got a degree in Law and he practiced in
Agrigento. After the unification of the country, Italy, he handled so many
offices in Sicily. Initially, he worked as the first councilor of the prefecture
of the city, Palermo, and from the year 1867 to the year 1869, he held the post
of the governor of Trapani, which is a town in the western part of Sicily. From
the year 1871 to the year 1874, hed held the post of the director of the
liberal political magazine, The Reform. He died in the year 1885 in Agrigento.
Work
The early works he did include the verse in the Italian language and a
poem that he wrote in Arberesh, which he dedicated to Saint Lazarus. The best
popular work that he did is Kënka
e sprasme e Balës that was originally published in Arberesh language and later
was put into other languages, Italian. The book was first published after his
death in the year 1887 in sections in the periodical Arbri i ri. In the year
1900, the work was printed in Arberesh and Italian in the journal La Nazione
Albanese.
