Life
Fatos is the son of Todi Lubonja, a close associate to Enver Hoxha and
the head of the Albanian National TV until the early part of the 1970s. In the
sequence of Hoxha’s division with the USSR in the year 1960, Todi was arrested
being an opposition. Fatos who had been studying in Tirana was also arrested
because of the discovery of the diary in his possession that was critical of
Hoxha.
Fatos was first sentenced to 7 years in prison; he was accused of being
part of a pro-soviet circle in the prison and was handed another 20 years in
prison. After he had spent 13 years at hard labor, he was transferred to
solitary confinement. It was there that he wrote a diary and a novel on the
paper of cigarette that was hidden in the back of a dictionary. The novel he
wrote, the Last Massacre is a take on communism under Hoxha. He was released in the year 1991 after he had
spent 17 years in prison and having passed through suffering of nervous
breakdown, while he was in prison. He is an outspoken critic of the
socio-political factors of the country, Albania.
