The initial main pattern of South African renowned music to appear was the pennywhistle jive (later called kwela). Black cattle-herders had long played a three-holed reed flute, changing a six-holed flute when they relocated to the cities. Willard Cele is frequently recognized with forming pennywhistle by placing the six-holed flute between his teeth at an angle. Cele reproduced a legion of followers and supporters, particularly after the appearing in the year 1951 film known as the Magic Garden.

Groups of flautists played on the streets of the South African towns in the 50s, many of them are from the white regions, where police would arrest them for making a public disturbance. Some of the young whites were interested to the music, and it became to be called ducktails.
