the 90s could be considered as the beginning of a vibrant alternative music
scene in South African. The Voelvry trend was a major effect in forming the
scene, but subject material markedly changed from demonstration to more
abstract and personal. Major festivities such as Oppikpppi and Woodstock were
started and increased rapidly, firmly strengthening the niche under mainly
white university students discovering a newfound intellectual independence
after the fall of apartheid. The initial ensemble to reach any major acceptance
was Springbok nude girls formed in the year 1994 who’s most acceptable chant is
the ballad known as Blue Eyes. Other popular artists formed in this period were
Fetish, Wonderboom, Boo, Henry,
battery 9, Fuzigish, Just Jinger and The Awakening.
