30s also saw extend of Zulu a cappella singing from the Natal region to much of
the South Africa. The pattern’s fame, eventually produce a major artist in the
year 1939 with Solomon Linda’s Original Evening Birds, who’s Mbube (the Lion), was possibly became
the first African recording to sell more than 100,000 copies. This also
provided the foundation for two more American pip hits which was The Weavers
Wimoweh (1951) and The Tokens the Lion Sleeps Tonight (1961). The pattern of
Linda music became to be regarded as mbube.
During in the late 1940s to the 1960s, a vocal, forceful type known as isikhwela jo was renowned, however national
attention declined in the 50s until Radio Zulu started broadcasting Natal,
Transvaal and the Orange Free State in the year 1962.

University Choir was also created during that period, part of the University of
Stellenbosch, is the oldest organizing choir in the country and it was
established in the year 1936 by William Morris, also the first conductor of the
choir. The new conductor is Andre van der
Merwe. They specialized in a cappella music and made up of students from
the University.
