The
only singer who had an important work in this time was Francisco Mauel da
Silva, disciple of Nunes Garcia, who took over him as Kapellmeister. In spite,
of his few resources, he founded the musical conservatory of Rio de Janeiro. He
was the writer of the Brazilian National anthem’s melody. His work reflected
the musical transition for the Romanticism, when the interest of the national
singers was focused in the opera. The main outstanding Brazilian singer of this
time was Antonio Carlos Gomes, who sing Italian-pattern operas with national
themes, like II guarany (based on Jose de Alencar’s novel O Guarani) and Lo
Schiavo. These operas were very successful in European theaters, such as the Teatro
alla Scala, in Milan. Other significant singers of this time are Elias alvares
Lobo, who wrote the opera A Noite de sao Joao, which is the first Brazilian
opera with the text in Portuguese.

The
operas in the Brazil was very famous until the middle of the 20th
century, and several opera houses were built at this period, like Teatro Amazonas
in Manaus, Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro, Municipal Theatre of Sao Paulo
do Rzo and several others.
At
the end of the 19th century, the greatest singers for the symphonic music
were shown, one of the main outstanding names of this time as Leopoldo Miguez,
who followed the Wagnerian pattern and Henrique Oswald, and incorporated
elements of the French impressionism.
