In
the beginning of the 20th century, there was a movement of making a
genuine Brazilian music, with less influences of the European tradition. In
this sense, the traditional was the main font of inspiration for the singers.
Some singers such as Brasilio Itibere da Cunha, Luciano Galldet and Alexander
Levy, in spite having an European way that included some typically Brazilian elements
in their works. This problem reached the highest point with Alberto Nepomuceno,
who largely used the rhythms and melodies from the Brazilian tradition.

A
significant event later was the modern art week in the year 1922 which had a
large impact on concepts of national art. In this event, the singer Heitor
Villa-Lobos was regarded as the most outstanding name of the Brazilian
nationalism which was shown.
The
Villa-Lobos did researches about the musical folklore of Brazil, and the
combined elements of both the classical and famous music. He explored several
musical genres like the concertos, symphonies, ballets, operas and other
symphonic, vocal and chamber music. Some of his main works are the ballet
Uirapuru, which their chorus and the famous symphonic series Baxchianas
Brasileiras. Also, some of the singers of this time are Oscar Lorenzo Fernadez,
Francisco Mignone, Camargo Guarneiri and Osvaldo Lacerda.
