released its own kwela artists that were not as famous as the South African
counterparts, but current kwela musicians like Daniel Kachamba & His Kwela
Band have enjoyed fame. This is a little known detail that South African kwela
music however had its roots in Malawi from the Malawi settlers that went to
work in South African and joined their music with the local sounds, making
kwela. Kwela in Chichewa refers to climb which is similar to the South African
meaning, which means to get up or rise.
