The
Malawian jazz bands also became famous. Despite of the name, Malawian jazz has
little in common with its American namesake. Rural artists played acoustic
instruments frequently in a traditional ways. These artists include Linengwe
River Band, Mulanje mountain band, Jazz Giants and Chimvu Jazz. In the
beginning of the 1970s, electric guitars had become common and American rock
and roll, funk and soul affects the music scene, resulting in a combination
known as Afroma.

The modern scene which was led by Morson Phuka was the most
popular exponent of afroma. The current Malawian jazz musicians include Wambali
Mkandawire and South African based Ray Phirir and United States based Masauko
Chipembere Jr.
The
jazz shows can be seen all over Malawi. Many Malawian jazz bands perform
regularly at local hotels and clubs. Sunday jazz is a renowned activity in many
lodges and hotels in Malawi, where it is a social activity for people in the
suburban regions to meet and listen to jazz music on Sundays.
