Rateliai,
which is round dances have a very important part of Lithuanian folk custom,
traditionally performed without instrumental accompaniment. Since the 19th
century, though, basetle, lamzdeliai, fiddle and kankles came to accompany the
dances while new groups also incorporate bandoneon, concertina, accordion,
balalaika, clarinet, mandolin, guitar, cornet and harmonica. After the Soviet
period, dance groups used box kankles and a modified clarinet known as the
birbynes; though the Soviet groups were ostensibly folk-based, they were
restructured and sterile and used harmonized and denatured types of traditional
patterns.
The
greatest important Lithuanian renowned folk music groups include Skriaudziu
kankles, created in 1906, and Lietuva. Such groups were based on the
traditional music, but were restructured to be palatable to the audiences; the
early 20th century also saw the increase of traditional musical
plays like The Kupisjenai wedding.
Some
of the greatest important new village groups: Marcinkonys (Varena), Ziurai
(Varena), Uzusiliai (Birzai), Seduviai (Seduva, Radviliskis) and others. Some
of the greatest important town folklore groups: Porringe (Vilnius), Ula,
Ratilio, Jievaras, Meguva (Palanga) Verpeta (Kaisiadorys and others. Children
folk groups: Ciciuruks (Telsiai), Antazave (Zarasai), and Kukutis (Moletai).
