The
music of Lebanon has a long history, Beirut, which is the capital city of Lebanon,
has long been known, particularly in the era immediately after the World War
II, for its art and intellectualism. Several singers appeared in that time,
among the most popular are Fairuz, Wadih EI Safi, Sabah, Nasri Shamseddine and
also in the early 1970s Majida EI Roumi, Marcel Khalife and Salwa Katrib, an
avant-garde folk singer and oud player and the most importantly, Ziad Rahbany
who on top of being an engaged singer/songwriter and music composer, was also
very famous playwright. Throughout the fifteen year of civil war, most of the
Lebanese music artists moved to Cairo or Paris with a large music scene in
Beirut only coming after 1992. The new pop musicians include Diana Haddad,
Nawal Al Zoghbi, Najwa Karam, Elissa, Hasifa Wehbe, Ayman Zbib Walid Toufic,
Ragheb Alama, Fares karam, Amal Hijazi, wael Kfoury, Meljem Zein, Nancy Ajram,
Assi EI helani and Fadel Shaker.
