scene in the year 1992, with release of the Tahitian Choir’s recordings of
unaccompanied vocal Christian music known as himene tarava, recorded by the
French musicologist Pascal Nabet Mayer. This way of singing is common in French
Polynesia and the Cook Island, and it is different by a special drop in pitch
at the end of the phrases, which is a featured formed by the several different
voices; this is also followed by steady grunting of staccato, nonsensical syllable
