Cairo was seen to be
associated with a roots revival in the 20th century, from across
Egypt, musicians are keeping common customs alive, such as those of rural
Egyptians (Fellahin), the Nubians, the Arabs, the Berbers, the Gypsies and the
Bedouins. A mixtures of pop and folk have also risen from the Cairo hit
factory.
A
type of notable music from the northern coast is Sawahli (coastal) music, and
is based around the Simsimyya, an indigenous stringed instrument. Among the
well-known singers include Abd o’l Iskandrani and Aid el-Gannirni.
