The taus is a bowed string musical
instrument from the north and central part of India. The musical instrument is
also from Punjab which is divided into Pakistani Punjab and Indian Punjab. The
musical instrument was the work of Sri Guru Hargobind Ji. The lighter form of
dilruba originated from this musical instrument. The taus has a sound box that
is made out of the body of a peacock. The neck of the instrument has 20 heavy
metal frets. The neck of the taus holds on a long wooden rack 28 to 30 strings.
The musical instrument is performed with the use of a bow. This musical
instrument projects a sound with deeper and full tone.

The dilruba came out of this musical
instrument and some debate is the work of the 10th Sikh Guru, Guru
Gobind Singh Ji, while that of the taus was the work of Guru Hargobind Ji, the
6th Sikh Guru. The dilruba was manufactured to replace the taus,
which was heavy. The attempt was meant to scale down the taus into what is now
called Dilruba. This improvement made it very easy for the Sikh army to move
the musical instrument on horseback.
