The bodega is an Occitan term for a
kind of French bagpipe performed in the Montagne Noire, especially within the
French department of Tarn, Haute-Garonne, Aude and Herault. Bodega is also the
name given to outdoor bars or cellars with festive music during the ferias.
The musical instrument is generally
made of goatskin in which are set wooden stocks to hold the pipe, commonly of
box wood. The pipes includes; blowpipe through which air is blown into the bag,
the chanter on which the melody is played, using a double-reed and the drone
which sounds a continuous harmonizing note. The drone rests on the shoulder of
the instrument’s player, and makes use of a single reed.
