There are two bagpipes that are called binioù
in Brittany; the traditional
binioù kozh
or biniou-bihan
and the binioù bras that were brought into Brittany from the Scotland in the 29th
century. The oldest native bagpipe instrument in Brittany is known as the
veuze, from which the binioù kozh is said to be derived.

The biniou bras is crucially the same as the
Scottish Great Highland bagpipe; set of the instrument are produced by Breton
makers or imported from Scotland or any other place.
The biniou kosh has a one octave scale and it
is very highly pitched. The musical instrument is tuned to perform one octave
higher than the bombard that it accompanies. More traditional versions of the
musical instrument have a single drone, while the modern versions of the
instrument sometimes have two drones. In the ancient days, the leather that is
used for the bag was often from the skin of a dog, but in the contemporary
days, it has been replaced by synthetic materials or some other leathers that
are easier to acquire, like the sheep or the cow.
Traditionally, the musical instrument is
performed in the duet with the bombard, a double reed musical instrument that
sounds an octave below the biniou chanter, for Breton folk dancing. Typically,
the biniou bras is used as a part of the bagad band, but it is sometimes also
paired with the bombard.
