The Basque Basque ‘alboka’ is a
single-reed musical instrument in the hornpipe style. Though the musical
instrument is a native of the Basque region, the musical instrument can also be
found around Spain, including Madrid’s gaita serrana, Asturias’ turullu and Castile
and Andalusia’s gaita gastorena. The name of the musical instrument is derived
from the Arabic word ‘al-buq’ that literally means ‘the trumpet or the horn’.

Hornpipe instruments are produced of
a single reed, a small diameter melody pipe that has finger holes and a bell
that is traditionally produced of animal horn. An animal reed cap often
involves the idioglot reed. These musical instruments are descended from the
single reed idioglot musical instrument that is found in Egypt as early as 2700
BCE.
The alboka has two cane pipes, a
handle that is made of wood, and a horn at each extreme. The musical instrument
may be descended from the Moroccan double hornpipe instrument that has two cane
pipes, each affixed with the horn of a cow. The musical instrument is
established in Spain by the end of the 13th century. Representations
of the musical instrument can be found in the ‘Poema de Alexandre’ and some
surviving medieval sculptural church decorations.
