The
Antigua and Barbuda music began with the discovery of Antigua which was then
populated by Arawak and Caribs, by Christopher Columbus in the year 1493. In
1780s African workers involved in the outdoor dances followed by the Banjar
(later bangoe, perhaps related to the banjo) and also toombah (later tum tum) with
the drum decorated with shell and tin jingle. In 1840s, urbane subscription
balls were common, which was held two times in a weekly within the European-
derived quadrilles followed by the fiddle, tambourine and triangle.

The
colonial era of the churches and the missionary activity displaced resulted in
the inclination of the music of the Africa slaves, who accepted the elements of
European –derived religious music. The brass bands of the Salvation Army were important
in the colonial era. In the middle to the late 19th century, a
number of Portuguese indentured workers came to the Antigua, then bringing
their style of music. And when most of the Portuguese left in the 1880s, the
Lebanese music was introduced into the island by the settlers from that country.
