The kkwaenggwari is a small flat gong that is used predominantly in the Korean folk music. The musical instrument is manufactured and performed with the use of a hard stick. The musical instrument manufactures a uniquely high-pitched, metallic tone, which breaks into a crashing tone quality that is like that of a cymbal when the instrument is struck forcefully.
The musical instrument is predominantly significant in samul nori and pungmul, even though it is also used in some other genres.
The name of the musical instrument is perhaps onomatopoetic for the sound that is being manufactured by the musical instrument, "kkwaeng-kkwaeng" the gong is struck with a wooden mallet to create a piercing responsiveness commanding sound. The musical instrument is used for the farmers band music nong ak and the shaman music.
