The danso is a notched, end-blown bamboo flute from Korea.
The musical instrument is performed vertically and used in the folk music of
the country. The musical instrument is traditionally manufactured from the
bamboo, but since the 20th century, the musical instrument has been
a product of plastic.
The musical instrument is derived from the xiao of China and
is used as an educational facility in the primary schools of Korea; much like
the recorder is used in the western countries. The musical instrument has four
finger holes and a thumb hole that is located at the back of the instrument.
The playing range of the musical instrument is two octaves, moving from low G
to high G. the lower sounds of the musical instrument are manufactured by just
blowing the flute, while the higher sounds of the musical instrument are
manufactured by variation in the strength of the blowing.
The ‘dan’ in the name of the musical instrument means ‘short’
and so refers to the notched, end-blown vertical musical instrument. Another
Korean end-blown musical instrument called tungso is longer.
