Biography
All through the five-year existence of Sui Genesis, they sold the total
of 600,000 albums, a statistic that in those days of early rock and roll in the
country, showed clearly the relevance and the impact that the duo had in the
local music scene of the country. In the origin of the band in the year 1969,
the band was formerly formed by Charly Garcia who is a player of the keyboard
and vocals, Nito Mestre, who is a player of the guitar, the flute and the
vocals, Ronaldo Fortich, a bass guitar player, Juan Belia a player of the
guitar, Alberto Rodrigues, the drummer and Carlos Piagari on the vocals.
Charly and Nito met at their time in the high school and they both had
their own bands at that time. Charly alongside Rodriguez and Correa formed ‘To
Walk A Spanish’ and Nito along with Piegari formed and were the lead singers in
their group called ‘The Century Indignation’.
As a sextet, the band came on stage for the first time at the stage of
the Santa Rosa School in Buenos Aires in the year 1969, though the group passed
through several changes till they finally became an acoustic duet. In the year
1970, the group performed at some little venues and that year, they showed up
on the TV for the first time of Channel 7, and it was signed by a known artist
called Eduardo Falu. After that, they soon travelled to Mar del Plata and that
was where they co-started with the songwriter called LittoNebbia.
In May of the year 1971, they participated at a series of concerts and
that was the turning point in the profession. For the next two months, they
played together with the bigger tickets like RoqueNarvajaand
Pedro
y Pablo
with guest artists like, Luis Alberto Spinetta,
HéctorStarc
and Emilio
Del Guercio, among others.
They first album they
did was called Vida and they had musicians like Jorge Pinchevsky, who is a
player of the violin, Alejandro Medina, who is a player of the bass guitar and
Claudio Gabis, who is a player of the electric guitar. They completed their
recording in the year 1972.
As a preview to the
album, the recording company dropped a single with both Canciónpara mi Muerte and Amigo
Vuelve a Casa Pronto. The official release of the album was done at the
conspicuous opera theatre of Buenos Aires in April of the year 1973. Francisco
PacoPratti, a drummer and Alejandro Correa a bassist joined Nito and Charly in
the band. A month after that they went to the studio to record Aprendizaje and
Bienvenidos al Tren, which are the first two tracks in the second album called
Confession de Invierno that was finished in August. The album consisted of the
recordings by David Lebon on the guitar and Leon Gieco and was dropped in
October of that year.
In the summer of the year 1974, they travelled to Cordiba, Mal del Plata,
Plunta del Este and Santa Fe and their tour was successful. After several
months of rehearsal, theys started recording their third album that was called PequeñasAnécdotassobrelasInstituciones".
The album was faced with the problem of censorship that in those days was not
glad with the young and old artist’s political persecution in the country, and
because of that, some music were substituted by other music. Juan
Represión was replaced by Tango
en Segunda and El Tuerto y Los
Ciegos replaced BotasLocas
(Crazy Boots). On other songs, lyrics were rewritten: Instituciones, Las
IncreíblesAventuras del Sr. Tijeras and Para Quién Canto YoEntonces. David Lebon and Pinchevsky Jorge as
well as Leon Gieco were all given invitation to participate in the recording.
From then, Charly
started working and experimenting on new musical instruments that had been
imported from the United States; a moog,
an ARP string synthesizer and a Fender
Rhodes keyboard.
The new songs were
formed on the 13th December at the Theatre Coliseo to 1800
audiences. The album was dropped three days after and before then had sold
30,000 copies. At the time of the winter of the year 1975, Nito Mestre and Charlywent on the PorSuiGieco
travel with Maria Rosa Yorio, Raul Porchetto and Leon Gieco. After the travel,
they were not comfortable with the problems of censorship that is being faced
by the group and they decided to dissolve the group so as not to allow it from
falling. Together with Nito Mestre they made up their minds to try luck abroad,
but two months later, Nito Mestre made an agreement with Charly that the time
had arrived for them to split.
They started a rehearsal for a huge goodbye concert. The show is still
remembered till this date. On the 5th September 1975, at the Luna
Park Stadium, in two consecutive shows before the total of 30,000 audiences,
Sui Generis said goodbye to their fans and it was a memorable night.
Solo Career
Nito Mestre and Los DESCONOCIDOS de SIEMPRE were formed

and the new born fans. The album was called “SinfoniasparaAdolescentes”,
a great record that was followed by Si, which was another evidence of the bond
between the two artists.
