The
early 80s introduced renowned interest on alternative rock ensembles such as
Scooter’s Union and The Usual. In and within Johannesburg of the increase of
the independent music scene dominated to not just a flow of ensembles
alternating from big names (relatively speaking) Tribe after Tribe, The Sofies and The Dynamics through to
smaller hopefuls What Colors, No Exit and Days Before, and also to the increase
of a vibrant DIY fan club magazine scene with Palladium and One Page to many
two titles of note.

South
African alternative rock increased more mainstream with two dominating
ensembles known as Asylum Kids which is from Johannesburg and Peach which is
from Durban having chart achievement releasing critically commended albums. The
burgeoning music scene within Johannesburg saw a flow of small ensembles,
encouraged and informed by the United Kingdom DIY punk ethic, form and begin
performing at an increasing number of locations from clubs likes of Bluebeat, Dirtbox, Metalbeat, King of
Clubs, DV8 to student locations such as GR
Bozzoli Hall and later to the Free People Concert on the University of the
Witwatersrand campus.
One
of the musician note to come from that period, known as James Phillips was
featured in several powerful and popular ensembles including Corporal
Punishment; Cherry faced Lurchers;
and his Afrikaans alter ego known as Bernoldus
Niemand (roughly interpreters as Bernard Nobody). With the Bernoldus Niemand character, James tried
to pass the language division and influence a whole extent of Afrikaans
speaking artists to the same punk ethic that had motivated him, and a popular
Afrikaans alternative rock scene increased from this influence.
During
that era, the only Afrikaans to success much mainstream popularity were Anton Goosem, who is a rock
singer-songwriter and Bles Bridges,
who is an impersonator of American lounge singer Wayne Newton.
