In
the period when the punk rock flourish during the late 70s, United Kingdom
punk-influenced South African ensembles such as Wild Youth and Powerage attained
a cult following, concentrated in Durban whilst in and within Johannesburg
ensembles such as Dog Detachment and the Radio rats and Young Dumb and Violent
also had a related following in the borders of the music scene. Cape Town also
had its own scene with The News and Permanent Force (also known as Private File
after BOSS intervention), Lancaster Band, Safari Suits, House Wives Choice were
taking the dominant, later on it was followed by the Rude Dementals, Red Army, Fred band and Riot Squad. Many of the
shows took place at The Scratch Club (which was run by Gerry Dixon and Henry Coombes) in the year 1986, UCT and
other indigenous locations, and some of the said ensembles passed through on
trips.
