SURDELINA: Italian musical instrument

The surdelina is described and illustrated by Mersenne as the musette de Naples; its construction was very complicated. Mersenne opines that the musical instrument was fabricated by Jean Baptiste Riva, Dom Julio and Vincenze; though Mersenne seems to have made alterations himself in the main musical instrument that is not very plainly explained. There were two chaunters with narrow cylindrical bore and having both finger-holes and keys; and two drone, each of them have ten keys. The four pipes were attached in the same stock and double reeds were used all through; the bag of the instrument was inflated by means of bellows.
