Panama
has a long record in jazz, starting with Luis Russell, pianist, composer and
director who settle in the New Orleans in the year 1919 and made important
impacts. By the 40s the port city of Colon boasted at least indigenous jazz
groups. Initiators of jazz in Panama include pianist composer known as Victor
Boa, Bassist Clarence Martin, Singer Barbara Wilson and French horn player
known as John Rubberlegs McKindo. This jazz legacy was currently revived when
the United States based Panamanian pianist Danilo Perez organized the first
jazz festival in the year 2000 in January.
