In the literary, the ghazal is a poetic type that is made up of couplets which share a rhyme and a refrain. Each of the line shares the same rhythm. Etymological, the term literally means the mortal cry of a gazelle. The animal is known as Ghizaal, from which the English word gazelles came out or Kastori haran (where haran means deer) in Urdu. Ghazals are traditional expressions of love, loneliness and separation, for which the gazelle is a suitable picture. A ghazal can thus be understood as a poetic expression of both separation ort loss of the lover and the beauty of love despite the pain. This form is old, initiating in the 10th century Persian verse. It is originated from the Persian qasida. The structural requirements of the ghazal are more severe than those of poetic types of traditionally written in English. In its pattern and substance, it is a genre that is capable of an extraordinary type of expression around its central theme of love and separation. This is considered as one of the principal poetic types the Persian civilization offered to the eastern Islamic world.

The ghazal is sung by both men and women, as an expression of love and beauty.
The ghazal moved into South Asia in the 12th century under the influence of the modern Islamic Sultanate courts and Sufi mystics. Exotic to the area, as it is shown by the very sounds of the name itself when correctly pronounced as gazal. Though the ghazal is very important as a type of Urdu poetry, today, it has influenced the poetry of many dialects. Many of the ghazal singers are trained in classical music and sing in either Thumri or Khyal.
