waltz (El vals) came in Cuba by 1814, it was the first dance in which couples were
not linked by a communal sequence style. This was, and still is, the danced in
¾ time with the inflection on the first beat. This was formerly thought shameful because couples
faced each other, held each other in the closed hold and so to speak and ignored
the surrounding community.
