The electronic pop music in Japan became a successful commodity
with the technopop craze of the late 70s and 80s, in the beginning of the
yellow magic orchestra and solo albums of Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruopmi Hosono
in the year 1978 before hitting fame in 79/80. Influenced by disco,
impressionist and 20th century classical composition, jazz/fusion
pop, current wave and technopop musicians like Kraftwerk and Telex, these
musicians were commercial yet uncompromising. Ryuichi Sakamoto claims that to
me, making pop music is not a compromise because I enjoy doing it. The
musicians that fall the banner of the technopop in Japanese are as loose as
those that do so in the west, thus new wave ensembles like The Plastic and
P-Model fall under the section alongside the symphonic techno arrangements of
yellow magic orchestra. The popularity of this music meant that several famous
musicians of the 70s that producers started employing electronic arrangements
for new singers in the 80s. Now, the upcoming musicians such as Polysics pay
explicit homage to this period of Japanese well-known (and in some cases
underground or complex to obtain) music. And the all trio girls ensemble
perfume, who debuted with Tokuma Japan in the year 2005, are also a techno-pop
band, taking on electronic, dance and pop music taking on auto-tune,
electrohouse and vocoders upon their singing to a major label. They are
contemporarily considered as one of the most famous ensembles in Japan.
