The
early 20th century saw the neo-classical music flourish in France,
especially singers such as Les Six and albert Roussel, an orchestra of artists,
who gathered around Satie, later in the century, Olivier Messiaen, Henri
Dutileux and Pierre Boulez proved powerful. The latter was a leading figure of
Serialism while Messiaen combined Asian (in particularly Indian) influences and
bird song and Dutilleux translated the improvements of Debussy, Bartok and
Stravinsky into his own, very personal, musical idiom.

The
most significant French contribution to musical improvement of the past 35
years is a way of computer-assisted composition known as spectral music, the
astonishing technical advances of the spectralist composers in the year 1970
are only currently beginning to gain wide recognition in the United States; the
major singers in this vein include Gerard Grisey, Claude Vivier and Tristan
Murail, since 1998, the musical works patented by Rene-Louis Baron made a big
step in the two areas of algorithmic music
and artificial intelligence.
