The washint is an end-blown wooden
flute that is traditionally used by the Amhara people of Ethiopia. Originally,
Amharic musicians would pass on their oral history through song that is
accompanied by the musical instrument and the krar, a six stringed lyre and the
masenqo, a one stringed fiddle instrument.

The musical instrument can be carved
with the use of wood, bamboo or other cane. Versions of the washint exist in
various lengths and relative finger hole placement. The player of the musical
instrument may use many distinct flutes over the course of a performance to
accommodate various types of songs. The musical instrument commonly has finger
holes that permit the player of the instrument to produce a pentatonic scale.
