In
the later part of the 1960’s the orchestra of the black Bahians statured dressing
as native Americans during the Salvadoran carnival, that identified their shared
struggles through the history. These orchestras included the Comanches do Pelo
and Apaches de Tororo and were known for a forceful and powerful pattern of
drums and frequent violent encounters with the police. The beginning of 1974,
the orchestra of the black Bahians known as IIe Aiye became notable,
identifying with the Yoruba people and Igbo people of the West Africa. Along
with a policy of loosening limitation by the Brazilian government the IIe Aiyes
sound and message spread to the orchestras such as the Group cultural do Olodum
that established a community centre and other help efforts.
