The ferrinho is a musical
instrument that belongs to the genre of idiophone. The ferrinho is produced by
metal bar that is scraped by another metal material. The player of the
instrument holds the bar in a vertical form with its lower end in the palm of
one hand and the upper end lying against the shoulder, he uses the other hand,
holding horizontally, the metallic object to scrape the bar with up-and-down
movements. The normal produced ferrinho is about 90 cm long with a straight
angle section to soften the handling. In a musical genre known as the “funana”
in Cape Verde, this musical instrument is used in the marking of the rhythm.

It is believed that the
ferrinho as a name is an adaptation of “ferrinhos”; that is the name by which
the triangle is also called by in the popular music in Portugal. In spite of
the name, the ferrinho is analogous to the instrument like the guiro than the
triangle.
