The erke is a large lip
disoriented horn that belongs to the Gran Chaco of Bolivia, Chile and
Argentina. The erke is made up of two or more lengths of cane that are joined
at the end to form a single tube. The internal nodes of the canes are moved out
and the exterior of the canes is often wrapped with gut or wool. The end of
possess an amplifier that is produced of cow horn and brass. The musical
instrument is blown from the other end and may be three to seven meters in
length. The musical instruments has no reeds in its mouth piece, the tongue of
the player is there to fulfill the role as it is put into the side hole of the
tube.

In the half part of the 20th
century, Andean folkloric musical groups used the musical instrument for
secular music among the indigenous people and criollo people of the Andes
although the erke is well used for ritual purposes.
Traditionally, only the
adult men are allowed to play this musical instrument and it is considered irreverent
to play the instrument outside the ritual context and it is commonly played
during winter as many believe that playing the instrument in spring or summer
can bring snow.
