The dance of the Cham is one of the most conspicuous religious musical subgenres in Bhutan, and it is shared among Tibetan Buddhists in Tibet and in other countries that have the roots in the 18th century. Lama and founder of the Bhutan Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal are also credited for introducing several masked dances into Bhutanese tradition. The performers during the modern Bhutanese Tsechus (which means festivals), Cham dances act during both to achieve the enlightenment and to destroy the evil forces in form of ritual purification. The ordinary people watch the Cham dances in order to get a spiritual benefit and merit. The music and the choreography of the Cham dance are heavily jointed with the Tibetan Buddism, However, some of the common features derive directly from the Bon religion. The Dramyin Cham is famous and have a focal point of several modern tsechus.
